I realize this is mostly a personal preference but I find myself sifting through the lot without settling on a favourite.

I have quite an ecclectic music selection but I'd have to say the bulk of my listening is with rock bands from the 60s - 80s. I listen through my car stereo and I have some Koss and Skullcandy headphones for any other time.

Do most folks have a preference or just leave the EQ off? Any suggestions?

Off. I use the EQ in my car head unit (Pioneer) and leave it off when using my Sony MDR-7506's. If they added a custom, say, 10 band EQ then I may use it. The presets aren't all that good.

Rock, usually. A lot of treble and a lot of bass. Just the way me likes it!

I use the included earbuds. Like the convenience of them.

I leave the EQ off, but only because it apparently drains battery. At least that's what Apple tells me in the manual. But when I do put it on, I use Rock, because I'd feel bad to play my GnR collection with anything else :p.

eq uses battery life

Personally using EQ's means there's something wrong with the way you are playing the song
if your headphones are good enough + Apple lossless Audio files = You shouldn't need to change the EQ ever

Dance seems to bring out the highs and lows a bit. I use that mostly.
I wish there was a way of setting the EQ on the shuffle as the music on it sounds kind of hollow.

Off, with good headphones the iPod/iPhone sounds just fine. Plus, imo, the eq is particularly bad and brings in lots of distortion.

EQ is off for fidelity. But I have invested in hi-end earbuds (when portable) and headphone amps. When you use this kind of equipment the EQ function acts as distortion.

Usually Bass Boost or Dance, I mainly listen to rap/hip-hop and techno, so it works fine. And seriously, turning your phone on wastes battery life, the EQ isn't going to do a lot more.

If you have decent earphones/headphones then you shouldn't need the equaliser on at all. Thats what iv found on my Bose earphones.

I set my 3GS to Rock a long time ago and forgot that the EQ was set. I don't recall if I ever noticed a difference or not. Maybe I'll turn it off and give it a listen...
