Not too sure about Dalrymple, but aside from writing an immensely popular blog (that is ad-sponsored) Gruber hosts a podcast, The Talk Show, which is sponsored.

He also appears as a guest on other podcasts, which I assume nets him a small appearance fee. He does talks at conferences and other events, which nets him an appearance fee. And don't forget guest articles on sites like MacWorld.
