There is a drafts, sent, and deleted mailbox option. Selecting any of those gives you the option "on my iPhone" or "on the server"

All of mine are set to "on the server." What would changing it to "on the iPhone do"?

Im sure everyone knows what this is but me , yet Ive never seen it mentioned here.

"on the iphone" uses a local folder, located on the iphone itself, to store those things. They don't get saved on the server, so you can't access them from other devices/mail readers pointing to the same server.

So for example, I have my .mac address account on my phone. If I set it to "on my iphone", any email sent to my .mac address will only show on my phone and not when I log in online?

No.

For example, if you set the "sent mail" to "on my iphone," then when you send a mail FROM the iphone, it will be in the "sent mail" folder on the iphone, but not on the .mac account.

It doesn't affect mail sent TO your account.

Duh, I guess there isnt an "inbox" setting, IDK what I was thinking. Ok, so it works similar how I thought it might.

Let me ask you this though, if I trash emails on my phone and have the deleted mailbox option set to "on the iphone" will that keep me from having to delete those emails a 2nd time from the online server when I log on?

I don't think so. Are you using POP or IMAP?

In any case, when you "delete" a mail, two things happen. It removes it from your "inbox" (locally, and, depending on whether you are using POP or IMAP and on various settings, on the server as well), and it moves it to "trash" (either locally or on the server, depending on the iphone advanced settings.)

If you are using IMAP, it seems to mark it as deleted but keeps it on the server (which i find annoying). I haven't tried POP, but POP generally leaves it on the server unless you set an option to delete it from the server as well).

I never knew there was an option. Just looked and dont see anything on my phone for pop or imap for my .mac account.

Basically what Im looking for is a way for my online account to sync what Im doing on my phone. If I move something to the trash on my phone, it moves it to the trash online. If I delete something from my phone it deletes from the server too. IDK if this is possible or not.

edit - I just set my .mac up on my phone with the basic "add account" settings. Can I select "other" and set it up using pop or imap and do what I want it to do?

Sorry, I don't know how .mac works. On IMAP, it pretty much works this way - things stay in sync across all the mail readers. On POP it doesn't work that way. Sounds like .mac is using pop.
