I have a MacBook with 160 GB HD. I've never used time machine before, but I should start in case the harddrive fails or something. What external HD would you suggest getting? I guess a little extra room on it would be useful too.

All platter-based hard drives are essentially the same. Pick what capacity you want (the standard recommendation is a drive 1.5x the size of your hard drive) and get the drive that comes with the best warranty. If you want some extra space a 500 GB drive could probably be had for $60 or so.

^I agree with the two above posts; personally I'm using an older, aluminum desktop HD that's 320gbs that I got 2 Christmass ago. I have one for TM and one that's the same capacity for random media files.

A portable one would be great (that doesn't require a standalone power source) but they're all great.

I just plug in and backup once a week or whenever I feel the need to.
