Long story short, I have a work phone, so I don't at all need a voice or data plan - but there are things I want to use the iPhone for (games, Skype, GPS).

So if I pick up a used 3G, not having a plan, would either the microphone (for Skype) or the GPS (for directions or golf course maps) be locked down in any way? I know I wouldn't have access to a 3G network and I'm sure WiFi would still work, but not 100% sure about these two features.

Visual Voicemail is one.

GPS is not one.

OK, so safe to assume that if I pickup a 3G without a plan, I can:

-Install Skype and make Skype Out Calls when I'm on WiFi
-Install any program that requires GPS and it will function

THANKS MacRumors!

Why not get an iPod Touch. It is essentially the same thing without the camera. It doesn't have a GPS chip but it does have google maps (which you can't use without data or wifi).
