I have an 867 MHz G4 tower and I have installed Leopard on it. To my surprise it works very well indeed. I added a faster Ultra ATA disk and it's practically flying.

The biggest drawback to speed on the thing in Leopard though is the graphics card. Currently I have an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX in it with 64 MB VRAM.

What graphics cards, (or are there any?) can I get to spice this thing up that will work with the operating system? Anything with more VRAM would be good.

ATI 9800 pro is your best bet. If you spend a little time researching how to flash a PC version, they can be had very cheaply and provide good performance.

As far as flashing goes, google strangedogs. Their forums (they just moved, can't remember where but google will find it) have flashing guides, lists of compatible cards, and ROMs available for download.

Great! Thanks to all for the info. :)

The 9800 Pro is the fastest retail card you can buy for the G4, but as negatv1 and disconap said some PC cards can be flashed to work on Macs. Strangedogs changed to TheMacElite and have a great forum and wiki.

Hi,

I just bought my first Mac ever. . .it's a Powermac G4 Gigabit Ethernet. I bought it cheap as an experiment to see if I like Macs. My question is this: I have a NVIDIA Geforce4 MX 440 64MB Video Card that I'd like to install in it. Is that compatible?

Thanks!

So would a Radeon 9600 Pro 64MB DDR Memory, DVI / ADC Video AGP work with a G4 sawtooth?

Bear in mind, you shouldn't spend too much money on an aging system. Even the base mac mini will run rings around your 867 g4 powermac.
