My current mbp (only 5 months new) has applecare on it.If I sell it and buy a new mbp..can I transfer that applecare to the new mbp? thanks

I don't believe that is possible, but having Applecare on a machine is a very good selling point and should be a featured item when selling.

EDIT: BTW- a quick phone call to AppleCare will answer the question with more certainty than we can too!;)

Agreed. AppleCare is tied to the machine.

Apple will only transfer AppleCare to another machine if they replace your machine during a repair.

You can also request a refund of the Applecare, which is a pro-rated refund less the cost of any Applecare you have used.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

I always sell my notebooks so the AppleCare is a selling point, but it's still good to know.
