In the past, I've hated screen protectors because, in my experience, they're ugly, easy to spot, and I've never needed one. So I've never used one.

This morning I was using my 3-day old X and noticed a very, very small and faint scratch on the screen only visible from certain angles with certain lighting. It didn't rub off. I don't know how it happened because I've never dropped the phone. Is this a sign that I have to get a screen protector? Any ideas as to what might have happened?

The oleophobic layer is very prone to scratches. Just being in your pocket with something sharp could do it. AppleCare does not cover these issues. Many just don't like looking at them so they add a protector. If you add one now, it should make the existing scratch hard to see.
