Just browsing the forums, the statistics at the bottom of the page indicated:

Most users ever online was 24,892, Aug 28, 2008 at 05:47 PM.

So I was trying to figure out what happened on that evening that so many users were on the site at one time? There weren't any Apple-related events that I know of... or is it pretty common to a large amount of people online?

I seem to remember it being on the front page of yahoo as well.

I'm pretty certain that was the cause.
