What happened to bluetooth audio in iOS10?

On iOS 9 as soon as I got in to my car (2016 VW Golf), and the phone connected music/spotify would automatically start playing.

Since iOS 10 this no longer happens. If I'm using spotify then get in my car, it works fine. But if I use any other app it doesn't then automatically launch spotify and continue playing.

I loved this feature since it was so convenient. Did apple remove it? I remember them making a big deal about it when iOS9 was launched. Maybe it's a setting I accidentally turned off.

Any ideas?

I actually prefer not auto play. It could cause frustration for me and become annoying somehow.

However, there is no setting about auto play when Connecting to a Bluetooth speaker. Some android OS could allow only media or phone audio to be routed to Bluetooth speaker if speaker supports it.
