what happened to fonts?

Don't know what caused it but since I installed SL my fonts have changed and this is most noticeable in google. I went to system preferences --> appearance...looking for the fonts tab and it is no longer there. I just want to get rid of this horrid font that I am now stuck with. Any help would be appreciated. Thank-you.:apple:

Dec. 2008 2.53 MBP running SL, 320 Gb HD, 4 G Ram....
