What happened to my iPad 2 display? (See attached picture)

Randomly took my iPad out today, only to find this weird wavy effect going on to the left of the display when held upright. It looked fine a couple of days ago. Any idea why this happened, and might it perhaps go away?

Backlight problem. Replacing a new backlight/screen would solve the problem
 
Thanks guys. That would be costly repair as far as I know. I gave the iPad to my mother. She says she doesn't notice it, lol.
