...if you do a search you'll realise that this is happening to both iPod touch and iPhone owners since the 2.2 update. You're not alone.

good to know before i upgrade! is it specific to a certain mail host? i use gmail through imap.

I think i found the problem. It seems the trashcan is missing in aol. Tho I see it in gmail. Now who the eff would steal a trashcan?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

You can create a new folder on the AOL website by right clicking on the folders to the left. You can name it Trash and it will show up on your Touch the next time you access your AOL mail. You can then go into your email settings and direct your deleted mail to that Trash folder.

Try this

Go to settings, then mail-calenders etc
Then touch email account you are having trouble with
Then touch advanced and you should see trashcan listed
Even if it is already checked touch it
Then close it out

You should now be able to delete your messages again
This was affecting my wifes ipod touch with aol mail and the new 2.2
