You are portably right about that, but since it was introduced at the keynote, I would guess that Apple has an interest in this as well!

That has already happened. Which is why they probably stopped development.

I'd definitely be interested in this app as a way to easily walk my buddy Pokémon. Doing 10km of walking a day without including exercise would go a long way to hatching those eggs and building those candy stores.
