Wow, that's really annoying. I haven't updated to 10.5.5 yet and my Time Machine preference pane still has the checkbox to show Time Machine status in the menu bar. I can't imagine what they're thinking removing it. I rarely did a backup manually, but I liked having the animated icon up there to tell me when a backup was happening or when the last one occurred.
 
Did you check to see if somehow the option became unchecked in the system preferences? I updated to 10.5.5 and still have the ability to have the TM icon in the menu bar.

I remember the menu bar icon for time machine check-box was usually right over the lock that says "click the lock to prevent further changes", but now it isn't...
 
Funny, i've still got the checkbox. but then again, I have never used Time Machine...

Oh.... I didn't notice that. I just saw the "air machine" which is different from mine...

Well, i'm in 10.5.5 and i do have all those things....
