I just opened my MacBook Pro and then I heard a loud "bing"?!

What was that? It still seems to work normally.

Well it is hard to say without more information. Reboot and if everything is fine just keep an eye on it.

It is a mid 2009 model. I think the sound came from the area between the display and the unibody.

I opened it while it was asleep.

You are sure it's not a System alert or an Apps notification sound, a "bing" sound is kinda strange to be hardware related, but then again it's hard to define a sound, without a recording of the sound it's hard for other people to imagine.

It sounded like an exploding light bulb.

It sounded like an exploding light bulb.

That's better:)

Hmm, you don't have the problem now you say, otherwise I suspect a "temporarily shorting" of the power to the display.
I don't know where the power to the display is located, you should check that out on iFixit, maybe it is near to where you described the sound came from.
Another possibility is a blown capacitor.

just look how it goes, if it does not happen again then maybe it was the hinge.
