What happens to the rMB when running heavy tasks?

I currently have a 13" MBA and when I watch videos or Netflix, the fan comes on, sometimes quite loudly. Since the rMB doesn't have a fan, what happens to it when the processor gets overloaded with heavy tasks? Does it just slow down from the thermal throttling? Will it start to skip frames?
