I often wonder this given the amount of resources, precious metals from around the world, etc, that go into producing things that many people replace every 1-3 years. I know a lot of it gets shipped to to Asia for recycling because I have seen pictures of children sitting on piles of computer chips, but is that it? And ebay, of course... how about plugging everything into a giant computer that can incorporate working processors and storage to make a giant, benevolent server and thinking machine a la Hitchiker's guide?

Recycling, rubbish, or grandma's attic. Probably a very small amount gets used in something people call art these days (making something hideous out of old tech junk).
