I am looking to buy a Macpro and would like to install one of the hard drives from my G4 powermac. Are all 3.5 HDs compatible? I see that the Macpro uses SATA drives -- how is that different from an ATA drive?

Sorry about the noob question. Thanks for the help.

You'll need to buy SATA drives - the older ones won't work. Sorry! Of course, you could always get a $40 enclosure and put the older HD into that, then connect it externally - that's very easy to do.

On the plus side, the newer SATA drives transfer at up to 3Gbps - vastly faster than your older drive. And they're relatively cheap - newegg.com has a nice 320GB Seagate one for US$95.
