A screen that takes up the whole front of the phone. The home button could be part of the touch screen instead of a physical button.

the touch only has 2 buttons on the whole thing, and it works fine.

I want to see a built in brethalyzer and a secret joint compartment

Why not? They use arbitrary buttons for resetting iPods and it's different buttons on different versions...

Because people hold down the volume buttons all the time, and accidental reset of your phone because you're trying to hear somebody more clearly would be a hell of an annoyance.

How about holding down both volume buttons and the top button for 6-10 seconds? Maybe add in that you have to switch ringer on and off first....wait that's just like the iPod!!!

No, nevermind, you're right. That makes too much sense.

FYI, I agree that they need the home button, but I'm just arguing for the sake of showing that there is another side.

Yay for ergonomics.

I have a better idea. How about they put a single physical button on the front of the device, just below the screen, instead?

Oh wait, they already did!

Yes....Getting rid of it would be dumb. I was simply stating a case for a full front touch screen.

PS - I can press both the volume button and the top button at the same time using one hand. 2 different ways, actually....left or right hand. Still, I'd prefer not to.

Forget resetting - how would you, you know, go Home?

If the point of an all-screen front is that apps can take up the whole screen (and the whole front) then they won't be showing the Home button some of the time, right? So then how would you get back to the Home screen?

If the Home screen button will always be shown on the screen, then why not make it physical?

An alternative is to move the Home button to the side or back. But iPhone already has 4 buttons there - don't expect Steve to add another one.

I think the home button should be made a 'touch-button' similar to the buttons found on the 3rd gen iPod.

Think of the area where the home button resides as like the "chin" on an iMac. It's not the greatest thing aesthetically, but it's a useful area to stash a bunch of the inner workings.

What's wrong with tapping the screen and the home button shows up?

Edit: I see how this might not work so well for other apps that have lots of buttons around where the home button would be though.

Because there are a million things you might need to tap the screen for in any given app, and you don't want the home button taking up real estate any time you have to tap...

It's just a terrible idea in general. The iPhone needs a home "button."
