What identifies a phone as an iphone to at&t and how can i change these things?

get a new phone. You will find no help anywhere with disguising your phones IMEI number.

Not gonna happen. You may get away with it initially but their systems keep an eye on that and will automatically add one back on if it is removed sucessfully.

The imei indentifies what phone your using to acess the network.
You can't trick or change that. Pay the $15.

I believe I read somewhere that it's only possible if you purchase an iPhone outside of the United States. I believe AT&T has all the IMEIs of all iPhones to be used on their carrier. They can't identify an IMEI of an iPhone that originated from another carrier. Perhaps swapping an iPhone with someone outside the country?

That's false.
They automatically identify every phone by the imei even ones purchased from other countries.
