The better question might be: what if the home button is really...just a home button?

I was thinking the same thing. Reading this forum it almost seems to be taken as read that there is a fingerprint scanner on the 5S. I'm not so sure. Would Apple really do something so gimmicky?

Why do so many guys keep thinking its gimmicky. Apple would only put in a reader that would work well and fast.

Lol, FP Scanner is gimmicky.

I highly disagree.
Depends. If it's just to unlock the phone then it's a worthless gimmick. If it actually gets used as part of the app ecosystem eg for online banking security or even for making payments directly from the device then yes it is something I could get behind.

But it seems like NFC is unlikely until the iPhone 6 - not that this bothers me as I have only recently upgraded to a 5 so I will likely not be upgrading until 2015, by which time it should be mature technology.

What if the home button on the iPhone 5S is a control mechanism to open a portal into a world where 727,040 pixels on a touch-screen show different colors to show an operating system called iOS 7?

:D

Actually this would be amazing.

12 or sarcastic? Which is it?

It will most likely be limited at launch. Maybe it will just unlock ur phone (which would still be great cause its annoying entering my 4 digit code every 5 mins). But, if the technology is good, fast & secure (which i bet the house it will be) then it will only be a matter of time before every major app that has passwords and payments will adopt it. In fact, I bet there are already some that have apps waiting in the wings...and possibly one or 2 at launch.

I have a feeling the 5S will go down in history as the phone that changes everything in the way of passwords and mobile payments. #truth.

I won't believe the home button includes a fingerprint scanner until I can stop typing an 8-digit password everytime I want to open my phone. Tap. Done. Impressive. That is, if it works regularly...

Corrected.

Also disagree. It wouldn't be a jaw dropping feature if it was only to unlock, but it would still improve my experience using my phone considerably.

Even for the very casual gamer like myself a joystick would enhance the experience. The only game I wish was on the platform is Gran Turismo. The problem would be with it not getting in the way the rest of the time.
