What information is a program sending?

I'm wondering if there's a way to see what an application is sending over the network. There's a program I need for school and little snitch keeps telling me that it's calling home randomly. I can't deny it because I need to submit using the program, but it'd be nice to see what information is being sent (or what information it gathers from my computer)
