I'm in the process of exchanging a base M1 Max for a build to order. I'd like to know what read and write speeds people are getting who have a 1TB or 2TB Max or Ultra (as I understand it, the Ultra has the same internal drive). Many people probably have Blackmagic's Disk Speed Test app. I'd be interested in stresses of 1GB and 5GB, with the app preferably run without other apps in the background.

I have to arrange the exchange by Friday (I'd like to do it tomorrow), and size of the internal drive is the last piece of the puzzle.

Thanks

@Falcon_64,

Thanks very much. Am I correct that that is at stress 1GB? I'm talking about the stress levels that are seen when you click on the gear symbol just above the "Start" button.

The write speed from @Falcon_64's Ultra 2TB (post #2) at 5GB stress is noticeably higher than what I get on my Max 500GB, and the 500GB "average" is somewhat lower than what's shown in the screen capture below. Read speed is about the same on the two machines.

It may take a while before enough owners of 4TB and 8TB configs report their speed to be sure, but it is speculated that the 2TB config still only uses one physical storage slot, where only the 4 and 8TB configs are filled with both slots.

And then Apple's advertised 7.4GB/s number was tested with a 8TB config.

But personally I see even the 512GB Max config speed being more than stellar for actual use anyway.

Wow - I didn't know that. I mean, the Mac Studio 2TB is fast enough, but you are saying that the 4 or 8TB would be much faster?

If that really is the case, can Apple upgrade a Mac Studio from 2 to 4TB?

Yes, although I don't think that Apple has offered this yet, at least publicly. The SSD capacity comes from modules that are slotted in, not soldered in. Personally, I don't see why Apple wouldn't be prepared to do this if the customer is prepared to pay for it.

Note that only Apple's modules will work. You can't buy your own and install them. This was a short-lived issue shortly after the Mac Studio was released. Louis Rossmann, of all people, made a video saying that the people who were demanding the right to install their own modules were out to lunch.

It wouldn’t make sense to upgrade the internal storage but for the speed increase… 2’000MB/s more in read and write… And of course 2TB more of storage space.

To take advantage of the two separate storage modules, they must be running in Raid0 though, and that means of course more risk, and when Apple adds the 2nd one, there must be a sync time for your data to be shared to the second module.

Hey Everyone,

Mac Studio - M2 Ultra - (24 Core / 76 GPU) - 4TB w/128 Mem. - 5GIG test.

Results from my machines below. Both tests were taken with a 1GB file size stress. Important note: performance was varying as much as 1000 MB/s from run to run.

What are the read/write speed for M2 Max (12-Core CPU, 30-Core GPU, 32GB RAM) with 512GB and 1TB SSD respectively?

Base 512GB is confirmed to be just 3500.
Not sure if I have seen 1TB, but vaguely remember someone reporting 6-7000 / 5000.

Hi. I have the same set up apart from only 128gb RAM. Regarding Blackmagic speed test, for some reason it won't let me run it on my internal Mac HD. Any idea how to overcome that problem. It says something about not having read/write permissions. Thanks.
