I thought that pages on my iPad would sync to pages on my mac, or am i just not doing something right.

iCloud seem useful only to backup iOS devices, guess 5 gigs is all what is needed.
I image there will be an pages update, hopefully soon
You have to do it manually for now. The iCloud website lets you download and upload your iWork9 docs. It's very kludgy, hope a patch or iWork11 comes out soon.
