I am relatively new to mac and need to download a .sav file for school. Unfortunately nothing happens when I download it. Do I need to purchase the Microsoft office software in order for it to work?

.sav is a common extension so it could be any number of possibilities. Could you post what school subject it is related to? It would help people work out what software you require.

it is for Georgetown's

graduate nursing ed program. It is for a statistics class and I'm trying to open a .sav file sent to me from one of my professors. My mac is prompting me to open it with iphoto and when I do, it says 'the file could not be imported, the file is unrecognized format'

do i need any software to open it up?

Yes. SPSS is the correct program for that if you're doing stats. There is a Mac version.

Download the trial here

Contact your college about it. Many have special student offers to get it cheaper. Otherwise go to SPSS's web site and buy it on your own.
Definitely the former rather than the latter. Having tried to buy software from IBM I can vouch it isn't for the faint-hearted :p
