It seems to come from a website called Unsanity.com... anyone heard of this and what it does?

You must have installed one of Unsanity's many very useful apps (Shapeshifter or Silk, etc). Those apps use a control panel called APE or Application Enhancer.

Did you pay a visit to www.unsanity.com and have a look around? It's right at the top of the Featured list.

No, it's fine.

Some third party applications need this plugin, to have access to certain settings.

Don't delete it and don't worry. It will update from time to time also.

You can find it under system preferences/other.
Set it to autoupdate and forget about it (I would grant it access to it's website too with little snitch or other blocking software).

Thanks, the wife looked around the site and found the app she downloaded... we've had a few things go wrong the last few days and it was easy to get paranoid and think "Oh no, now our computer's been attacked!"

But really it was just us.
