my MBP 2009 is slow and i notice in the Activity Monitor that Dropbox is using a a lot of the CPU (44%) but not uploading any files that i'm aware of and there is also FxCrashRptApp that is also using a lot of CPU. what is FxCrashRptApp when it's at home and why is it using so many resources?

I'm not familiar with FxCrashRptApp. Open Activity monitor and select the process then click the i in the toolbar. Then go to the far right tab to see what file/app is using that process.
