Macbook, 2 1/2 yrs old, running Lion OS. Suddenly sluggish, did single user start, got this message

** checking catalog file
disk 0s2: I/O error
Invalid node structure
(4,27032)
** The volume HVB could not be verified completely.
/dev/rdisk 0s2 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8

on rebooting got apple logo and then progress bar that got perhaps 2% along, then shut down. This must mean something to someone other than expense for me.

Backed up on time machine.

Any help gratefully received

Bruce

OP, I updated the title to make it a bit more descriptive.
