What is latest Apple TV version?

I am buying AppleTV for the first time this weekend. What is the latest one I should be getting?

The latest one is the 3rd generation, revision A. You can easily identify it by the model number: A1469.

So just to confirm what I need in addition to AppleTV is an hdmi cable and an optical audio for my stereo recvr correct?

HDMI yes, optical is optional. Depends on your stereos setup. I would think the sounds from the HDMI would work.

On a newer stereo recvr it would but my Denon is over 10 yrs old. Its from the time that optical audio was the best there was. 🙄

Should work fine. That is how mine is set up and I get 5.1 surround just fine.
