What is MobileSync and .mddata

Can someone tell me what MobileSync and the extension .mddata is on the mac?

It is taking up almost 6 GB of space on my computer. If these files are something I can trash, I'll do it. I just don't know what they are.

I found them using the MacKeeper app.
