Looking at what storage I have available on my Macbook and it says 43gbs is taken up by "other". What does that usually entail and how can I minimize it?

"Other" is everything that is not in one of those remaining categories, like the OS for example.

The other issue is in Yosemite that storage graphic is completely screwed up and does not read correctly. You can fix it be reindexing Spotlight, but it just gets messed up again.

So I'm guessing it isn't stuff I can find and remove? How much space does Yosemite take up?

Around 15GB or so. There would not ordinarily be anything in there you would want to delete.

Like I said, that number is all off under Yosemite.

For me it was Chrome cache. Once I cleared out the cache "Other" came down to about 16GB.
