I'm very confused about what overheating is and what is classified as overheating, I just thought it was when the computer gets too hot to function. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2020 (intel) and I took it to the apple store a few days ago as I was having some issues with the battery life and the computer getting very hot and restarting every time I did something intensive that would heat the macbook up.

I noticed issues with heating and the battery life about 6-9 months after I bought it, so I brought it into the apple store to get it repaired, I brought up the heating issue and they said that the battery could be causing it. After the repair, the battery seems fine, but the macbook still gets super hot near the touchbar area, like burning hot and restarts whenever I'm doing something intensive (eg: editing on premiere pro). The fans also kick in if have more than around 8 chrome tabs open. I called up apple again, they said to update it, so I did, and the frequency of restarts came down, however, it still occasionally restarts whenever I do anything intensive, 3 months later, the battery life is down to 80% of its inital capacity with ~100 cycles so I bring it into the apple store to get it repaired, I once again bring up the heating issue and I tell them that I think it's been overheating. They ask me where it's being heated and they ask me if the computer stops working when it gets hot, I tell them where it's heating up and that it used to restart alot before updating it, but still occasionally restarts when doing intensive things. They tell me that that's not what overheating is and that it sounds more like a software issue and it's just the computer doing hard work. they also said that macbooks are designed to heat up there as users don't touch that area when using it.
does it sound like my computer is overheating or not, is there more to the definition of overheating that i'm not getting :( ?
thanks~ :)

what programs are you using while the MacBook is over-heating?
Many early 2019-20 intel MacBooks (mainly airs with some pros)
could not handle Zoom calls with other programs running were they would over-heat.

I find that editing in premiere pro seems to cause it to restart the most, however having multiple semi-intensive apps running at the same time also causes it to slow down and then eventually restart (photoshop, steam, pretty much any aaa game)
I've stopped using many of these applications, but sometimes I will need to do some video editing for schoolwork and it gets super annoying when my computer restarts
most other apps just cause the fans to go off really loudly and the top area of the keyboard near the touchbar to get very hot (microsoft teams, chrome, blender)

WOW! my MacBook air from 2010 never gets that bad!
i would zap the pram a lot, keep at least 20% of the hard drive free and limit program use.
there are others who have the same MacBook pro that can provide more tips, we hope.
