Hello,

There are certain PDFs, mostly scientific ones, that are just too small to read on iPhone screens comfortably. These types of PDFs are, for the most part, fine to read on an iPad Mini

Granted the ratio of the screen between iPhones and the iPad mini is different, but I find it a bit crazy the Pro Max is only 1 inch smaller than the original iPad Mini

Does the larger bump into "this is now readabie" comfortably? How is it with comic books?

Here is an example of one of those PDFs:

iPhone 16 Pro Max in landscape mode is around the same width as the current 11-inch iPads in portrait mode.

The image below is the original iPad mini and iPhone 16 Pro Max in landscape mode.

Aspect ratio matters. It's like saying a 6-inch pencil, measured diagonally is only slightly smaller than an iPhone.

iPad mini has a 3:2 ratio compared to 19.5:9 on iPhone Pro/Max.

The iPad mini display area is 32 sq. inches. The Pro Max is only 18 sq. inches.

Probably still not ideal. If you want to read comfortably, consider getting either an iPad or galaxy fold.

View the PDF while using in landscape orientation.

The actual math says the original iPad mini display is 4.7-inches wide in portrait. The iPhone 16 Pro Max 6.2-inches wide in landscape. Far more than your graphic suggests.

The graphic has both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and original iPad mini in landscape mode.

I made a mistake. I was referring to the width of the current iPad, iPad Air 11-inch, and iPad Pro M4 11-inch.

The iPhone Max can be nearly as adequate for text PDFs as the iPad Mini IF (somewhat big if) you don’t mind more (vertical) scrolling (since in landscape orientation they have similar width, which I assume is the orientation one would want to read a text PDF on a smallish screen). So it just depends how much (vertical) scrolling bothers you. However, if the PDF contains a lot of images (like a comic), the images will be able to appear much bigger on the Mini than the Max due to the Mini’s significantly larger surface area, so then the Mini has the clear advantage.
