what is .pkinstallsandboxmanager used for?

I ran a disk space checking program and found that there is a folder called .pkinstallsandboxmanager taking up 5.3gb of space. I've Googled it and can't seem to figure out what it's used for. Is this a temp folder that didn't get cleaned up properly? Can I delete it safely or should I leave it alone?

I'm on Mavericks.
