iPad Pro What is Preferred Display Setting?

Hi, on my iPad Pro M1 12.9” 2021, under Display & Brightness, there is a Preferred Display Setting. What is that? When are we supposed to use HDR and when are we supposed to use SDR? Does this setting affect the brightness of both the iPad display and external display?
