This morning had over 104 GB disk space and then this afternoon, I only had 93 GB left. I used "WhatSize" to see what was taking up so much space and it showed the file '/private/var/log/windowserver_last.log' as 12 GB.

What is this file? Is it safe to delete?

Thanks i advance.

Junk it. I had this very same problem - the log ate 95% of my hard drive, and I freaked out because I couldn't figure out where the space was going. I'm glad you figured it out!

It is running willy-nilly due to some bug. It's safe to trash it, I did.

I guess you don't let OS X do much maintenance at night. I'm guessing maybe 4 - 5 months or maybe much more worth of use, since it last done any maintenance.

As I was curious to see mine and I just had a look, and they are nowhere near anything like you describe.

wow. What did it end up being? a bad hard drive?

No idea. But apple replaced the drive, and that fixed it. I'm inclined to think it wasn't a bad drive as I could still access it (at the very end), and it was not listed as failing nor making any death sounds. Just another piece of junked hardware from an Apple computer, thanks to yours truly.

I have the same problem!

Hi everybody!
After reinstalling the operating system on my ibook G4 I went from having 21 G free to ~7 G and a /var/log/windowserver_last.log of ~13G.
What shall I do?
I have been reading different things: somebody say it is safe to cancel but some others says it freezes if you do.
Any advise?
Thanks for reading!!!
Lori

Well, if you have a backup, I'd go ahead and delete it... I like to think it's safe, but in case it's not you can go back and think again.
