Three days ago I've noticed a small red envelope near the battery status on my iphone. I'm wondering what that thing is. Thanks.

i tried this:

1. Press and hold the Home Button down (the button below the screen).
2. Briefly press the Lock/Power button (the one on the top edge).

not working with me :S
when i press the lock/power button it simply locks the phone.

not sure if this works or not but if you have Gmail set up you might have a red envelope on your phone like you would on your mac computer. The Gmail notifier. Just what it reminded me of but I am prob. wrong.. ;)

I haven't installed any Gmail notifiers. I don't think it is related to Gmail at all.

How can I post a screenshot?

on the iphone (only works on 2.0 software), whle the home button is pressed, press the power on/off button. you will see the screen flash white. this flash is the screenshot being taken.

then if u go to your photos -> camera roll, the picture you just took will be there.

transfer it to your computer and then post it up here.

oh, but mine is 1.1.4

You can just take a picture of the screen if you have a dig. camera near you.

Googling around, it looks like a program for hacked iPhones called "Taskbar Notifier" puts an envelope up there by your battery...

http://code.google.com/p/taskbar-notifier/
thats what i suspected as well (see my 1st post, 7th from top)
does it look like this:
homescreen_jpeg.jpg

1) 1.1.4 does not have simple screen shots.
2) The red envelope is reportedly caused by "Taskbar Notifier" thanks to EDIT: philgilder

3) Take a pic to help us out further - the jailbreaking app is the only thing causing this.

mine is different.
now its gone... a friend called me and asked me why didn't i answer his SMS.
it seems i'm not receiving any SMS.

well, it is skinnable
anyway, any follow ups to the SMS, is it not getting through from any person?

Phil got it in post #7 (which I missed -- sorry Phil!)
i was just pointing out incase OP missed it... no worries :)
