I am getting my first mac in a couple of days and I was wondering if I should buy from an apple retail store
Or should I look around for a better deal?

Apple's prices are pretty consistent from place to place.
I strongly suggest you look at Apple's refurbished machines. Great machines, full warranty, with nice savings. Link can be found at the lower left corner of the online store's homepage.

Refurb is the best imo the base one is 1099 and the high end one is 1399 i believe.

Find an online retailer that won't charge you sales tax. Since you are in CA you are kinda of screwed because Amazon and Apple will charge you sales tax.

AFAIK Amazon only charges tax in New York State.
Amazon only collects sales tax on orders from New York State:

In the States, yes, it is only New York that gets charged tax...but in Canada, Amazon.ca actually charges tax based on province.
i looked it up, and amazon charges tax in kansas, kentucky, new york, north dakota, and washington.
