I am getting my first mac in a couple of days and I was wondering if I should buy from an apple retail store

Or should I look around for a better deal?

Apple's prices are pretty consistent from place to place.

I strongly suggest you look at Apple's refurbished machines. Great machines, full warranty, with nice savings. Link can be found at the lower left corner of the online store's homepage.

Amazon.com has them for $1229 with no rebate. I've bought a system from Amazon before and was very satisfied.

Refurb is the best imo the base one is 1099 and the high end one is 1399 i believe.

Just beware of the tax that comes with buying a refurb. I was going to purchase a MacBook Pro from apple refurbished but ended up having $100 tax on it, which brought it right up past the price of buying it *new* at macmall. So I went with the macmall deal, just have to remember to send in that $100 rebate they have :D

i used macmall and retailmenot.com, before shipping, mine was $1212. just last week.

Find an online retailer that won't charge you sales tax. Since you are in CA you are kinda of screwed because Amazon and Apple will charge you sales tax.

California orders are not subject to tax.

From Amazon's website, "Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax."

AFAIK Amazon only charges tax in New York State.

i think there are other states where amazon charges tax (washington?), but yeah, amazon doesn't charge tax here in california. $1229 macbook, shipped is a pretty nice deal.

Yep, got mine from Amazon. As another poster stated, the tax that is added on to the refurb, brings it pretty close to amazon's or Macmall's prices.

yeah but the apple store refurbs are WHEN they have them in stock, which seems to be every few days as opposed to amazon who you can just click buy now and its at your door sooner then the refurbs are in the refurb store.
