What is the best opensource or freeware to use to extract SMS data from a backup?

I just want to get my SMS data out of a backup file.. what is the best/most trusted software to do this? I don't want to spend any money and this is literally all that I want to do with the file.

I have googled around quite a bit and found different programs.. most of them have trial versions, but honestly, I don't want to jack with those. Surely someone has written a simple program that will do the trick.. I just need some help finding it. Any and all help is appreciated!

p.s - I'm running Windows XP on a PC... not a mac -- syphone apparently isn't an option for me..

On a mac I use and love phoneview. I just visited their website and they recommended TouchCopy directly in their FAQ.

[Edit]: Missed the part where you don't actually wanna spend money. It may be hard to find a quality program that does this. Even syphone for mac stopped working. For me atleast.
