What is the difference between an unlocked iPhone 5 v/s a T-Mobile iPhone 5 when purchasing directly from The Apple Store? Aren't they both unlocked and the same identical phone?

If you bought a new one starting April 12 they are the same thing except unlocked, otherwise the T-Mobile iPhone 5 has AWS 3G support (1700/2100)
If you are buying an unlocked iPhone 5, you should buy the T-Mobile version. It is the only one guaranteed to support AWS. Apple hasn't replaced the regular unlocked iPhones with the new variant as of yet. My guess is within the next month there will be no difference except the pre-installed SIM in the T-Mobile version.
