Musicians (and non-musicians), any ideas?

This has had me curious for several months. Take a listen to 11:17 onwards on this track. You can hear the drummer doing something, but it doesn't sound like a normal drum set—maybe it is though. Any ideas what he's doing? It sounds like a combination of multiple drums, and sounds really cool. Also, this entire track is DEFINITELY worth 17 minutes of your time!

sounds to me like he’s playing the drum set with his hands. Gives a nice soft sound and the ability to do open and closed sounds (ringing and muted). Check out Papa Joe Jones solo on Caravan for an old school example. Jeff Hamilton is also a master of this sound.

edit: here is a good clip of Jeff Hamilton. Hands portion starts around 3:20
