What is the GT650m equivalent to in terms of yesterdays top Desktop GPU?

If you had to compared the what high end card would be equivalent to the GT650m found in the Retina Macbook pro from a few years ago what would it be? Nvidia 7800GT ?

Far in front of a 7800gt. (Even the integrated 4000hd is getting close to 7800gt performance! )

Its more like a dual 8800gtx desktop

I have an ancient desktop computer with these 2x8800gtx in sli and it is very comparable in framerate when playing games to this laptop.

Technology has certainly come a long way since I was building my own rigs!

I guess one could say the 650M comes close to the 280 GTX Desktop chips.
The 7800 series is just way way older and slower. A 650M should beat any single chip older than the 200 series.

Nope. I have an 5770, it's still faster and apparently also a BEAST untl today.
