What is the little hole next to the earphone jack??

I have an iPhone 4, what is that little hole? And why do you think Otterbox leaves it exposed on their Defender case?

It is the second microphone, its used to filter out background noise on phones calls.

i believe its a secondary microphone for noise cancellation.
