What is the message limit before the iPhone dumps all your convos?

I remember one time it had deleted most of my messages, granted they were dating all the way back to 2009 since I had an iPhone. So how many messages will the phone hold before it deletes some texts?
For reference: remember those phones that had a set number of messages in the inbox and outbox then you had to delete some or else you couldn't receive any more?

The iPhone has a capacity of 75,000 messages.
 
The iPhone works the same as the phones you describe - when it hits the limit, it stops receiving new messages. It doesn't delete old ones automatically.
 
I've got texts going back to January 14th, 2008 -- when I got my replacement iPhone 2G (after getting drunk New Years Eve and putting my original phone in my drink) ^__^

I think that used to be the case, but it may have changed. I have definitely had older messages in conversations removed. I have seen other reports of it as well in this forum. I think that started around the time of iMessage in iOS 5. Of course that could be a bug as well.
