If this has been covered before, I'd greatly appreciate the link.

Whether it be music to buy or movies to rent, the "release date" given by the iTunes Store often has nothing in common with the item's release date. Why is that? More importantly, does the phrase "release date" have meaning or does it not?

I think it refers to when the song was added to iTMS. If they were part of the original signing, I think the release dates are proper, if the artist/label came on late, I think it has the day they were added to iTunes.
 
yes i have noticed that a lot of the iTunes 'release dates' are not the same as the actual CD release, that is likely due to when they were added to the store, if the label sees the digital version as a different release as the standard etc.
