Why is Apple still pushing the 4/24 street date?

The concept of street dates in retail is to ensure that all stores receive stock before a product is sold so that no retailer has an unfair advantage over another. As we all know, no other retailer outside of Apple (and the handful of department stores in London, Paris, Tokyo) will be selling the Apple Watch at launch, and Apple's own retail stores will supposedly not have any salable stock.

Why hold back shipments to those who have pre-ordered? Get them out the door into people's hands. This launch just doesn't make any sense.

There could be a couple of reasons I can think of:

  • They're still manufacturing them, so they hope that most people will get their Apple Watch closer to launch date
  • It gives them more time to fix bugs, improve speed, general optimizations
  • Allows people to try them on first before they decide to buy
  • MOAR HYPE!!!11one
