Not sure I understand. Can someone provide some clarification? This just comes across as confusing to the casual fan. Not to mention delaying the release of the X was a bad move.

X is too expensive
X has supply issues and will not be able to come close to meeting the demand of planet earth
Apple is in business to profit and more money is made with 2 phones(or 3 in this case)

I was really looking forward to that iPhone X, after seeing that price however I think I am going to have to give it misss. I just cannot justify spending that much on a phone.

X is too expensive to be the only new phone this year. There needed to be a new phone/upgrade in keeping with their usual product pricing and target market.

Because the X's premium price tag is out of reach for many people. I'm sure Apple identified a segment of the population that wants a new phone with modern features (doesn't want to buy last year's model) but can't afford the X. The iPhone 8 is for them.

It's the classic Hi-Lo approach.

There aren't that many easy innovations with smartphones. Smartphone replacement cycles are longer. Apple is doing everything to convince you to upgrade from iPhone 6 Plus. $669/799/999 to target all audiences.

iPhone X is the iPhone they should have released this year but they can’t make enough of them to allow everyone to have one.

The reasoning is that they were hoping to get TouchID integrated into the X, but they failed. Date slips, they need a device to be "orderable" so they had a backup plan, the iPhone 8, that has TouchID, but no FaceID.. and the iPhone X which has FaceID, but no touch ID.

Prediction is that next year, once they figure out in-display TouchID, they will stop the iPhone 8 and keep iPhone X around, but have an:

iPhone XT

T stands for TouchID. Simple as that. It's confusing this year, but that's just because of the way technical issues got in the way.

resell value will be higher as well, there is no noticeable difference in cost.

Money money money. I remember back in the day i could get the latest iPhone for 649 € and it stayed like this up to the iPhone 6. then it became more and more. Now the iPhone 7 still costs about the same as it did a year ago thanks to making the latest even more expensive. Insanity

Sales of smartphones are declining if i am not mistaken so they have to make up for it by selling less for more to keep the shareholders happy. This works only for so long imo.

Like i know companies that kick out staff at the last quarter of the year to save money on salaries only to make it seem like the goal of the year has been reached. At one point there are no more people to kick out. Pathetic

The ipX is Apple's version of up-selling new features at a healthy price increase.

The ip8 is nothing more than a 7s.

Both are duds for different reasons.

Anyone who buys either phone at full price probably have money burning a hole in their pocket. How else to explain why anyone would want either phone.

If the carriers package something attractive to make people buy them, only then...maybe?

My advice...wait for deals.

Based on how they marketed FaceID, I wonder if that will prevent them form putting TouchID back anywhere. It would be like a step backwards, and Apple never does that.

And do you remember how they claimed that wireless charging is pointless if you need to wire the charger?

Goal was to distract consumers into buying plus or regular 8....either that or goal was to get people juml to x version and not buy 8 and plus.

If you’re right, the X will go down as a stopgap dud. A big one. Kind of like the iPad 3-except a lot more expensive.

If the ipX new features were incorporated into the 8+, and the ip8 brought up the rear with LCD display, etc..this year's releases would have graded a little better.

As it stands...people are paying more than they should for the ipX features (OLED, etc) and the ip8 is nothing more than a 7s with the A11, portrait camera feature and the increased 4K capability...pretty underwhelming.
