What is the rectanglular shaped item above the ear speaker?

I noticed in pictures of the white iphone 4 that there is a rectangular item above the ear speaker on the front of the phone. It is not visible on the black phone. Does anyone know what this is? It looks as if it might be an lens over an LED?
