Hey,

I've been literally searching for months to try to find out what sound this is! I've found very similar ones, but still not this. It's something in the vein of a metallic screech or distorted feedback. That's the closest description. It's heard in countless film trailers, shows, movies, etc. Very distinct, everyone that I've showed it to recognises it and has heard it before (like the Wilhelm scream), but can't put their fingers on what it is exactly...

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

it's a cymbal being bowed. . i think.

or possibly the waterphone (LINK)

I'm not certain if it's a bowed cymbal or a cymbal scratch. The attack of bowed cymbals is usually slower sounding, but then that can be changed via editing, etc. But at any rate, bowed, scratched, and scraped cymbals can make rather interesting snip-its of noise.

Here's a cymbal-scratch based sound effect that I made from a CC sound sample that you (or anyone else) can have if you have use for such things.
